Having Perspective (Part 2 of 2)

September 9, 2008 by

I was performing a hair transplant on a nice gentleman about 2 weeks ago who provided some interesting insight. He talked about how if three houses were on the market, two of which were very similar in design and a third one was very different in design, the better valued or quality house that had a similar designed house to compare it to would be the one that would have the highest chance to get purchased. In short, we human beings need a point of comparison to help make our selection. This is another type of perspective.

I always say that those individuals who have never had Botox, Restylane, or facial surgery elsewhere have a harder time appreciating what I do for them. My patients who have always and only been with me take for granted (a bit) that I do not hurt them during office procedures and create beautiful results for them. I jokingly say, “Go get Botox somewhere else so that you can appreciate me more.” Basically, I love all my patients so I am just kidding around. But I can say those patients who have had fillers, Botox, or other treatments done anywhere else can see my difference and are even more passionate about what I offer.

Sometimes for clarity, we need a point of comparison to help ourselves see more astutely. A reference point can be one of the most important things to help an individual perceive something more clearly. I remember reading this business book (can’t remember which one) that talks about how a mature market sector almost invariably has two major players with one leading the other followed by a host of other smaller players. For example, Coke and Pepsi co-exist because each brand attracts a loyal following with Coke edging out Pepsi in overall sales. We can think of Coke more clearly because we have Pepsi. There is a reference point for Coke by saying this is what Pepsi is like and how it is different from taste to marketing.

Anyway, just wanted to provide another way that perspective on an issue is so important by having a comparison in the same category. Yesterday’s blog talked about larger life perspective by comparing two different things: our particular culture against another’s.
