Mindfulness Mondays 16: Be A Captain

September 14, 2009 by

abrashoff_michealNo man is an island.  We all interact with one another on a daily basis, and that interaction can be a positive one, a neutral one, or a dreadfully negative one.  Reading Michael Abrashoff’s wonderful book, It’s Your Ship, he says that when he is having a crappy day, he gets out of the way so that he does not pull down the energy of everyone around him.  You don’t need to be the captain of a naval vessel to pull down the energy of those around you.  However, you are also in a position to bring the energy of those around you even higher or lower with every interaction.

The question you should ask yourself, “Do you radiate peace or nervousness to those around you?  Is someone more anxious after leaving your presence or more at peace?”  High-energy people are ones that express peace and calmness (what conventional wisdom would point to as low energy).  Low-energy people are those who are highly caffeinated, nervous and strung out (what wisdom would claim to be high energy).  We can’t radiate peace to those around us when we are ourselves unsettled, restless, and uncomfortable.

This week, become peaceful and tranquil.  Allow that peace to radiate to all who come around you.  Smile broadly and peacefully.  Calm your heart and energy and see if you can uplift those around you through that positive energy of peace and love.
