Mindfulness Mondays 49: Savor the Small Things
May 3, 2010 by dr. lam
There is a tale of a zen monk who was chased off a cliff by a voracious bear. As the monk fell over the cliff, he grabbed a tree branch. He found himself perched just above the jaws of a jumping lion. Turning to look at the tree branch, he noticed two small mice gnawing at the branch. Just at that moment, he spied a strawberry, which he gently plucks and devours, exclaiming “Ahhh delicious!”
This famous story can have multiple meanings. We should live life to the fullest. We should not worry about tomorrow. Or a combined, live life today for tomorrow you die! However, we can also look at this in a more subtle way. Despite the maelstrom of turmoil that surrounds us, we can sit and enjoy for a moment the wonderful fruit of life no matter how small: the taste of a Kumamoto oyster, the smile of your dog, the smell of a perfume. Whatever small things we are missing in life, let’s look at it this week and observe something we have overlooked and exclaim like the monk, “Ahhh delicious!”

Isn’t it amazing that, when we are looking for joy in life, it leaps out at us everyday and everywhere. It’s just waiting on us to notice. Love it!!
