Mindfulness Mondays Part 1: Generosity
June 1, 2009 by dr. lam
Well, we have completed 5 full meditations on Mondays, and I have received wonderful feedback from many sources. I would like to grow and expand this category into a new term from “meditation” to “mindfulness”. What I would like is for you to carry this “meditation” into a mindful state on a particular topic that will influence the way you think for the remainder of the day, the week, and hopefully for the rest of your life.
You can still begin each day or the first day with a meditation on the theme for the week. In fact, that is a great way to set your intention forward. Remember that when our intention is to practice and think in a certain way that we do so. Accordingly, you can begin your routine with a 10 minute meditation focused on the theme of generosity. I will give you the tools for doing so in this blog. I don’t think you need me to guide you by voice anymore. You are all quite matured now in your meditation practice!
Generosity must begin with ourselves. When we are impoverished in our soul, we cannot begin to help others with generosity. It begins with self-acceptance. Give yourself love and acceptance. Be generous with how you see yourself. Spend the first few minutes of your meditation turned inward then radiate those thoughts outward. Focus on being generous with your time, your money, your passion, your love, and your spirit with others this week. Take the close of your meditation to focus on generosity toward others. Allow yourself the openness to determine what that word means for you. We are often too constrained in our perception of what generosity is: giving money to charity. We need to see how we can become more generous to ourselves and then to others. Allow that to be both your daily meditation this week and your mindfulness/intention for the remainder of the week. Begin each day by setting your intention for both generosity toward yourself first then so that you can give it to others. Beginning with a daily meditation on generosity is a great way to establish your intention for mindfulness.
