The Omnivore’s Dilemma Part 10 of 10: In Closing
December 2, 2009 by dr. lam
Pollan’s third and final part of the book explores the elaborate and intricate methods by which he procured his self-fabricated repast consisting of a pig he hunted, mushrooms he collected, vegetables he grew, and abalone he plucked from the freezing brine of the Pacific coast. He also engages in an intriguing discussion on the ethics of eating animals, which to keep the political argument of this blog relatively clean, I will not endeavor to elaborate. Suffice it to say that I still enjoy my steak rare after reading (and deeply pondering) the arguments but support my brethren who maintain a strictly vegetarian philosophy and lifestyle.
Covering the canvas from a highly refined fast food meal that could be consumed in a speedy motor vehicle in under ten minutes to a wildly laborious and near impossible journey to create every morsel of food on the dinner table himself, Pollan argues that a moderated diet may be the best option, or at least the most tenable position. As all of you know, I maintain that moderation in almost all things in life is the key to happiness and pleasure. Too much of anything can sour the palate, beyond even the vagaries of food.
Being sentient creatures, we all need to make rational choices in our life that are well educated, albeit openly biased based on our religious, political, cultural, and gender legacies. However despite the limitations that we may have in our nature or our nature, I think these blogs strive to raze the dividing walls and aim toward a more universal perspective on life, and in this case food.
As mentioned in my previous blog series on Pollan’s most recent book, In Defense of Food, I had a radical epiphany in France while simultaneously reading Pollan’s work and realized that eating fresher foods, more plants, more slowly was the key to a healthy lifestyle. However, being too strict with anything in life or feeling guilty about your choices will only encumber our ability to enjoy life and partake of its rich diversity.

i have been working with a friend who has pancreatic cancer. her husband, also my friend, gave me this “recipe” for how they have fought cancer and have been winning, that i wanted to share with those who might be interested. it has great relevance to this blog series:
The things which are impossible with men are possible with God.
(Luke 18:27)
Prayer is foremost in healing of your body.
this link has a very good prayer that we have found to be a powerful part of Catherine’s healing process http://www.stbarnabas.us/prayer/media/rosary.pdf
Beat the cancer.
Work to remain strong in your resolve to rid your body of its afflictions by conditioning your mind. If you can, ask a family member or another close individual to work with you in building the will power to overcome the cancer. Picture it gone!
Food – You are…. what you eat.
Diet is a large factor…. Most likely the root cause of your affliction or a large contributing factor. Did you know that sugar feeds cancer cells? Choose a diet that is free from the processed foods, sugars and starches that turn to sugar. Choose organic fruits and vegetables. Find meats that are raised on grass and finished on grass as well. In our area is Dominion Farms… http://www.dfmeats.com Limit the amount of meat in your diet. Choose Brown Organic rice….. never white rice.
We have found two books that have helped a lot. Beating Cancer with Nutrition by Patrick Quillin And The Macrobiotic Path to Total Health: A Complete Guide to Preventing and Relieving More Than 200 Chronic Conditions and Disorders by Michio Kushi, Alex Jack
Cut out the fat from your diet….. trim it off from the meats…. Eat really lean meats like Buffalo Meat. Or move to the Macrobiatic diet altogether.
You need to watch the movie…. Food Inc. it came out in June of 2009. Watch a trailer of the movie by going to this link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5eKYyD14d_0
No more processed salt…. Use sea salt only.
Miso soup with organic tofu, wakame and shitake mushrooms is a great morning starter. Carrot juice warmed up is also good in the morning.
Water
You need water that is close on PH to what your blood is. http://rainfreshwater.com/index.html this link will take you to a company in Garland Texas. There are other companies outside of the Dallas area… just search for purified water and then check out the company for the PH to be close to 7.4 as well as the chemicals removed and nutrient enrichment
Cooking and Storing Foods
Cooking should be done in stainless steel, cast iron or glass cookware. Don’t use plastic containers, Teflon non stick type of coatings and aluminum cookware. Store foods in glass containers. Do not use Microwaves to heat or cook foods…. They zap the nutrients out of the food. Do not burn or over cook foods. The more your re-heat food the less its nutritional value is.
Nutrients for healthy tissue and blood.
Many things are available on the market place as well as thru individuals. Some of the things we have worked with are….
Nutrient IV’s from Anti-aging and Vitality Centers http://www.antiagingandvitality.com/ If you do not have this center in your area… look for someone doing Bio-Identical nutrient and hormone therapy.
Another produce that you should consider is PPARS. The following link will take you there. http://noblelifenow.com/
Wheat grass is valuable for killing off the free radicals in your system…it comes in powdered form at the vitamin stores.
Super Foods
Add into your diet the super foods that fight cancer… here is a link to one of the informational sites http://www.squidoo.com/superfoodsfightcancer These foods give your body the essentials for survival. Also check out this video about super foods its on Youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jyZf2I1wceU
Chemicals
Clean out your closets… get rid on the chemical cleaners and other products. You can absorb the chemicals into your lungs and thru the skin. Use natural cleaners such as baking soda and vinegar.
Your Health
You cannot afford to be sick with a cold or the flu. Keep out of crowds as much as possible… stay away from sick people in general. Be sure friends and family visiting you, are not sick and have not been exposed to any one that has been sick.
Natural Killer Cells
Stimulate the Natural Killer Cells within your body by using NK-Stim from Anti-Aging centers product.
Chemo and other medications
Chemo Therapy is the medical professions answer to any disease. Follow your doctors recommendations and tell him/her what you are doing outside of the Chemo. If they are not receptive to you doing anything outside of the Chemo…. You should look for a second opinion.
Sleep is ultra important to helping the body heal. Tell your doctor if you are not able to sleep. Get something either natural or otherwise to help you sleep.
Pain Management is important for helping the body to heal. You have to keep your pain level down so your body can concentrate on killing off the cancer cells.
Chronic Disease Funds
There are several funds out there that can help supplement the insurance deductibles… based on your income level.
